Contemplating the Tree of Woe

My Own Theme Design

Since I have been posting here with so much greater regularity than any other blog I have done, I have decided to make my own wordpress theme and host thes blog myself. However I am not to that point yet, so don’t worry you can still get all the CToW updates right here ;).

With that all in mind though, I spent a lot of this last weekend trying to design my new theme but reflecting back on the weekend, it seemed to just be an exercise in frustration. Several times I would get a design going in the right direction, just to find out a couple of hours later that the design just wasn’t working ><. On a side note though, I was able to make a lot of progress on the business site I am designing for my wife :D. All told I probably got 3 designs to various stages of completeness but I could never even get marginally satisfied with any of them. I thought about what might be holding me up vs. why the design for my wife just seemed to flow and it hit me that on the latter I had criteria and goals for what the site needed to be. For my site though I just new I wanted a blog design that worked in a tree some how. So instead of just jotting them down on a napkin (though I’m sure that’s how many things of greatness begin) I decided on writing them here. Not only will I not lose my goals then, but you can also give me feedback on them, if you are so inclined :). With that we are off.

Goals for CToW 2.0:

  1. I want to easily share my thoughts on “guy stuff”, like action movies, and on “Christian stuff” like why are there two creation stories, and my design should reflect this type of content.
  2. I want the people that read my blog to comment with there own ideas and thoughts in an easy way.
  3. I want to be proud of the blog/site as a whole.
  4. I want my site to make The Daily Slurp (none of the sites I have submitted ever have :(, but this goal has the lowest priority, hence being #4)

If I think of more goals I will list them here but that should do it for now. I don’t know how many web/graphic designers read this blog, but if you are out there, are there any goals that you find helpful to set for your personal sites?
